Our founder — my dad — isn’t your average human, and I don’t think that will ever change. From a young age, he was wired to hustle. Fiercely independent, Matthew Purcell decided long ago that quitting was simply not an option. Sure, there have been plenty of failures along the way — but never once did he quit.

Over the years, my dad tried out more than a few business models. Some were good, others… not so much. But each time, he pushed forward to the next adventure. Convincing my mom wasn’t always easy. She’d roll her eyes, maybe get a little mad, but in the end, she’d jump in, leave her steady job, and chase the dream with him. Let’s just say there have been some interesting conversations around our dinner table.

That’s where my parents come in. People may have said, “They’re doomed!” But my dad has always been like a chihuahua: small but scrappy, ready to fight anytime, anywhere. Instead of worrying about the competition, my parents asked one simple question: How can we put our customers first every single day?

Whether it meant getting someone’s fridge running the same day or making sure a family felt confident about their purchase, that mission guided them from the very beginning.

Now, as my parents work to build a new appliance store, the daily struggles are real. But there’s one non-negotiable: every new team member must carry that same can-do spirit. At Purcell Appliance Center, our goal is simple but powerful — to make every customer genuinely glad they chose us.

Funny thing is, just the other day we overheard someone mumble, “Local businesses are doomed!” We’ve heard that before. And yet, here we are.

Sure, you can shop at the big goliath stores — there are plenty of them. But we’re proud to be different. We might be small, but like that little chihuahua, we’re always ready to take on the fight — and that’s exactly what you’ll love about our store.

We here at Purcell Service are grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to give back to the communities to which we belong. As active members of the Urbana-Champaign community, we do what we can to pay it forward. Our company supports many charities and good causes, including the following:

• Lifeline-ConnectUrbana, IL Substance abuse is rampant, but there is a safe place where men can experience recovery while discovering God’s purpose for their lives. Lifeline-connect is a Christian faith-based solution to life-controlling drug and alcohol addictions. Our mission is to help men rebuild their lives emotionally, financially, physically, socially and spiritually. This residential learning center provides a healthy and stable environment where men are able to focus on their recovery and receive the community support they need.
• Dove, Inc. Domestic Violence ShelterDacatur, IL Dove is an organization that engages religious institutions, volunteers, and advocates seeking to coordinate efforts to address unmet needs and social injustices. These needs are met through coordinated programs focusing on domestic violence, homelessness, education, volunteer and community empowerment, and individual emergency need fulfillment. Dove works for justice, equality, and understanding among all people.
